Dhaka, June 16 (UNB) - Communications and Railways Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said steps would be taken to upgrade Dhaka-Mawa highway to a four-lane one considering its importance and increasing number of vehicles plying it.He said this while participating in a special programme for creating awareness to reduce road accidents on the highway. The minister said unnecessary speed breakers would be removed from Dhaka-Mawa highway gradually. “Primarily, a rumble strip will be installed for every 10 speed breakers.”Rumble strips, also known as sleeper lines or audible lines, are road safety features that alert inattentive drivers to potential danger by causing a tactile vibration and audible rumbling. Obaidul Quader exchanged views with people about obeying traffic rules, refraining from overtaking and haphazard parking of vehicles and not crossing roads risking life.He also witnessed the operation of BRTA’s mobile courts in different spots on the highway, including Buriganga Bridge-2, Dhaleswari Bridges 1 and 2, Nimtali and Srinagar.Lawmaker Tarana Halim, columnist ABM Musa, columnist Syed Abul Maksud, chairman of road safety advocacy group Nirapad Sarak Chai and film star Iliyas Kanchan and actress Rokeya Prachi, among others, participated in the awareness-creating programme.
