Thunderbolt kills 3 in Habiganj; Barguna farmer strangled to death

Dhaka, June 16 (UNB) – Thunderbolt killed three people in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district early Saturday while a farmer was strangled to death over land at Patharghata of Barguna district in the morning. In Barguna, farmer Abdul Ali, 55, had a longstanding dispute with his first cousin Shahjahan over a piece of land at Gyanpara village at Nachnapara union in Patharghata. As Shahjahan went to work at the disputed land Abdul Ali obstructed, triggering an altercation. At one stage Shahjahan swooped on Abdul Ali and strangled him to death at 10 am. In Habiganj, lightning strikes killed two farmers and a minor boy during thunderstorm at Lalchan and Bongaon villages at Dewarganj union in Chunarughat early Saturday. The dead are: Nayeem, 8, and farmer Kabir Mia, 35, of Lalchan village and farmer Abdul Haque, 32, of Bongaon village. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mahmud Hasan said thunder storm coupled with onrush of hill water from upsetram in India inundated 50 dwelling house in the town and several villages of Chunarughat, sadar upazila and another upazila bordering India`s Tripura state. He said Khoai River was flowing 190 centimeter above the danger level while water level of Korangi, Sonai and Sutang also exceeded danger mark on Saturday. Several thousand families of the three upazilas became marooned. Flood water also entered Daniapur area of Habiganj town inundating dozens of houses rendering at least 50 families marooned. Besides standing crops on several thousand acres in six unions of Chunarughat and Joynagar and Barakandi of sadar upazila were washed away.
